Music Hackday NYC

The awesome Music Hackday is coming to NYC. Twilio's John Britton has the news and details. It will take place the weekend of Feb 11th and 12th. Location is TBD at this time. NY Hacker is involved as well.

There have been ten Music Hackdays to date and none of them have been in NYC, which is certainly one of the top music and tech destinations in the world. So now it is our turn to bring it.

If you are into hacking in and around music, I hope to see you there. I plan to swing by a couple times during the weekend and be there for the presentations Sunday afternoon.

I love the Earth Destroyers hack, but unfortunately it seems like anybody who leaves their home continent is by definition an earth destroyer. On the plus side, though, Sharon Van Etten is an earth saver! 🙂

        Of course she is 🙂

Thanks for posting this Fred. I started Music Hack Day back in London in 2009 and we’ve been wanting to bring the event to New York for so long! It’s the perfect host city and the timing seems perfect. So I’m really pleased that John has made this happen. As well as ourselves (disclosure: I work at SoundCloud), there’s some other great companies taking part that I’m sure the AVC community will be familiar with eg. Boxee, Twilio, The Hype Machine, Last.fm etc.The hacking is always a lot of fun but there’s a serious point underlying the event too. There’s an interesting new developer ecosystem starting to emerge around music (and media generally). My hope is that these events push the boundaries for innovation around how we consume, create and interact with music. I really believe that is starting to happen already and it’s a big opportunity for the music industry, as long as they can learn to embrace the hackers and this new ecosystem. ‘Embracing the chaos’ as Clay Shirky would put it.Would love everyone’s thoughts on that. Here’s a fuller post outlining my thoughts on the subject: http://midemnetblog.typepad

Embracing the hackers is key. I’m not sure we are there yet but I think weare making progress

I reblogged a quote by Chris Ward (ex last.fm PR) from today that said:”Ditch the manager and hire a programmer.”

I would like a service for helping me determine what cities to visit for some great concerts that I would like. It would take my last.fm feed or Itunes library file, mash against a concert listings db (pollstar, jambase), and then suggest road trips and air trips around the world. (I.e. You should go to Pitt this weekend – kings of leon play Fri, Angus & Julia Stone play Saturday). It might have Google Maps mashed in to show me specific road trips I could make (even if it requires me flying from Buffalo to BWI to rent a car and drive DC to Boston for a night show, to NYC for a night show, and back to BWI days later).Someone hack my dream come true 🙂

Well here’s something that might help you if you’re coming in Croatia or region. http://musicmap.eu/iPhone and Windows Mobile version coming soon. For now there’s Android app.

Paul Lamere, who is a developer at The Echonest (another company that has been an integral part of Music Hack Day and help organize the Boston event), actually build this already at a previous Music Hack Day. Here’s the link, although I think it’s offline right now because there’s quite a lot of data crunching involved:http://musicmachinery.com/2…They use the Songkick (@fred was that what you meant by Soundkick?) and the Echonest APIs.
