A Gift For The AVC Community
A couple days ago my son "graduated" from 8th grade and in the moving up ceremony his teacher read this section of a poem called The Low Road by Marge Piercy. As she was reading the poem, it made me think of this community and what it means to me. So this is for all of you.
—————-
Alone, you can fight, you can refuse, you can take what revenge you can but they roll over you. But two people fighting back to back can cut through a mob, a snake-dancing file can break a cordon, an army can meet an army. Two people can keep each other sane, can give support, conviction, love, massage, hope, sex. Three people are a delegation, a committee, a wedge. With four you can play bridge and start an organisation. With six you can rent a whole house, eat pie for dinner with no seconds, and hold a fund raising party. A dozen make a demonstration. A hundred fill a hall. A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter; ten thousand, power and your own paper; a hundred thousand, your own media; ten million, your own country.
Comments (Archived):
I think Kid might like this post :)Also fit’s nicely with a post I read yesterday via Hacker News about the single person start up. http://www.aaronstannard.co…I’d substitute “with four you can play a fourball” 😉
beautiful sentiment, you need to re-post it as a video with you reciting it in your best shakespearian voice and dressed accordingly
I second that idea.
i’ll need to work on that deliveryi don’t have that in my toolbox right now
I wanted Fred to take part in my (video) poem:I’m through with standing in line for a bullshit promotionWorking for a luddite who hasn’t got a notionThis career hasn’t turned out quite the way I want it to be(Tell me what you want)I want to join a start-up in the digital spaceAnd build a rock star business just like Steve CaseOr better Sergey and Larry or Mark or Evan, Jack and Biz(So what you need?)I’ll need some VC funding from a quality firm [Fred’s line]Have to watch the dilution and the other terms Don’t want to give away too much precious equity(Been there, done that)I want to build a business with lots of scaleThat leverages real time / local / long tailThen sell it for a hundred mil seems fine to me(So how you gonna do it?)We’ll build an iPhone app, distribute it freeThen monetize with ads that target to a tee’Cause we all just wanna be big Tech starsSecond time entrepreneurs with exits and scarsThe backing comes easy and the money comes cheapWe’ll sell before we get in too deepAnd I’ll tweet my drivel like a digital playerAnd check in everywhere so I can be MayorSpend all my time on the conference panels Which will all be covered in the digital annalsHey hey I wanna be a Tech starHey hey I wanna be a Tech starSing along at http://www.bit.ly/TechStar
That’s sweet dude
If you can get Holly Madison to take part again, I’m sure you’d get lots of volunteers to be in the video
That would be a real gift for the AVC community, and I’m sure the whole of the internet :PMaybe throw in a little Leprechaun dance for the hell of it..
Or, challenge him to eat a whole pie by himself.
this reminded me of elementary school, entering high school, and the godforsaken period of one’s life known as adolescence. sucks for your son boss. oh well. at least it only lasts a few years.
he’s handling it pretty well so farmy teenage years suckedhis seem to be working out better
Now that I know you’ve been broke AND your teenage years sucked…I hate to say it but you’re making me feel better. (…but only because there was a happy ending.)Isn’t there something redemptive about seeing our kids launch into an entirely different teen experience?
Nothin’ like a little Schadenfreude to make us feel a little better!
nice…thanks!
Gracias. Si, se peude. ; )
I declare it to officially be AVC Poem day…One Inch TallIf you were only one inch tall, you’d ride a worm to school. The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.A crumb of cake would be a feastAnd last you seven days at least,A flea would be a frightening beastIf you were one inch tall.If you were only one inch tall, you’d walk beneath the door,And it would take about a month to get down to the store.A bit of fluff would be your bed,You’d swing upon a spider’s thread,And wear a thimble on your headIf you were one inch tall. You’d surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.You couldn’t hug your mama, you’d just have to hug her thumb. You’d run from people’s feet in fright,To move a pen would take all night,(This poem took fourteen years to write–‘Cause I’m just one inch tall).- Shel Silverstein
that’s a good onei love AVC poem daywell done
Makes you wonder the kind of world Josh and younger folks will inherit. What value do we add to the world, and what problems have we shrugged off on the next gen.If nations are 10 million, are popular web services considered rebellious to the nations they begin in. They certainly don’t inherit the same government as Brad pointed out.Massive networks duking it out with members acting as soldiers, and developers as arms suppliers (features). Mind share being the scarce resource fought over.
I havent penned a poem in about 8 years but somehow this post inspired me to write a quickie again, I used to write all the time (on ACTUAL paper). My penmanship is near graffiti these days but as long as I can read it. 🙂
Just in case more of us get similarly inspired, it’s worth quoting Randall Jarrell here:[I]t is as if the writers had sent you their ripped-out arms and legs, with “This is a poem” scrawled on them in lipstick. After a while one is embarrassed not so much for them as for poetry, which is for these poor poets one more of the openings against which everyone in the end beats his brains out; and one finds it unbearable that poetry should be so hard to write – a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey in which there is for most of the players no tail, no donkey, not even a booby prize. If there were only some mechanism (like Seurat’s proposed system of painting, or the projected Universal Algebra that Gödel believes Leibnitz to have perfected and mislaid) for reasonably and systematically converting into poetry what we see and feel and are![…]It would be a hard heart and a dull head that could condemn, except with a sort of sacred awe, such poets for anything that they have done – or rather, for anything that has been done to them: for they have never made anything, they have suffered their poetry as helplessly as they have anything else; so that it is neither the imitation of life nor a slice of life but life itself – beyond good, beyond evil, and certainly beyond reviewing.
wow
Jarrell was a tough critic. He was also a poet. This is probably his most famous poem:The Death of the Ball Turret GunnerFrom my mother’s sleep I fell into the State,And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters. When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.
Nice, thanks! I used to hate people some time ago, but my psychiatrist told me to be more time around other humans and I improved a lot. 😀
Aww – I was expecting you to take us all out for milk and cookies, Ã la Andy Kaufman.Nice poem though.
lol
Definitely the compounding power of networks. Light your own fire and change from within. Light others and change the entire nation.
beautiful
since it’s poem day here at AVC (see kevin marshall’s comment in this thread) i wanted to share a short poem i just wrote, specifically for the AVC community:oh my god9/11 was an inside jobdamn we got robbedby crooks like doddremember there’s only one prob –it’s that 9/11 was an inside job”9/11 was an inside job,” by kid mercury
I know a Kid called Mercury,An expert in kook-o-logyHe sings, he strums, he likes a beefAnd thinks that every suitHides a thief.:)
indeed mr mercury always likes a beef, but only because the truth is what he speaks.you see the truth always wins the beef –especially when the opponent is a lying thief.
Usual disclaimer: I’m just messing about Kid.As someone said, “I disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”.
people beef with kooks and want to talk trash, i just laugh and show ’em the facts.
Tell me you didn’t just attempt to make trash rhyme with facts. That’s inexcusable – kook or no kook.
If mercury rhymes with kookology, trash rhymes with facts. But if you want to take this beef video we can prove it. If you’re scared, though, I understand, no worries.
mer – cur – ykook – olo – gyChoose your beefs Kiddo.
Try rhyming “Mer-cu-ry” with “Fred’s Fu-ry”.That should work.
Fury at what?
Who cares? It rhymes! Make something up!The key to a good story is start with something catchy and back into the facts. 🙂
Lack of free speech!
what, no freestyle rap video?
I am always happy to drop it like its hot and go video, but I need my own stage here in fredland. I mean your the boss so this stage is yours, but I can only do so much from the comments. If you want me to do video, I can build a fredland soc net, and then I can drop the video from my own stage here in my own corner of fredland. As part of my services as bouncer I can manage fredbucks for you too. I’ll impose and collect all fredtaxes. Make sure everyone pays tribute to the boss.
Waving tricorn!!!!!
There needs to be a proper hype man to warm up the audience
There once was a Kid on Disqus,About Truth and $teve Jobs he’d fuss.Preferred gold to the dollar,Said to Fred: “Need me? Jus’ holla.”‘Cause there’s only one bouncer for us.
Lol! If there was a fredland poetry badge for top community poets, I think you’d definitely earn the badge for that one — at least you’d have my vote!
Can’t go wrong when you start with “There once was a girl from Nantucket”.No one wants to come up with a Haiku?
Oops — meant to hit reply instead of “like” — this is like a chat room — I’m on AVC on my computer and got your comment via Disqus email on my BlackBerry! Real. Time.
KM professes doom with cash catastrophes, followed by new hope in virtual currencies. He cuts up chumps with style on AVC,while truthing us out with his kookology.before I drop this syllable and let it be,I’ll tip my hat, and wax lyrically *more ominous base line*What you thought me finished? Please sit down folks,If you ask Kid Mercury the moon landing’s a hoax.Hey Kid what about the pyramids or alien beings? He’ll tell you that they’re landing pads and not for sight seeingBut I digress this show is just about over,I’ll curb my enthusiasm before you label me groverI had to work in a sesame street character to rhyme with over 😀
lol, this is the foundation of a great rap song mark!
Ordinarily I save rolling around on the floor laughing hysterically tears streaming for JLM’s cracks — today you win!
I take offense to that!If it’s not in Haiku, it doesn’t count.
You want Haiku?T demands HaikuYet who can Haiku like you?Certainly not me…
Too bad I don’t knowhow to write an Haikuor else I’d doUhmm, never quite learned how to count syllables in English
It’s just like finance. You take a number structureand make up stories.:-)done with poetry. now i’m seriously getting back to work…
lol, you know how it is, humor in truth 🙂
i love it, thanks for sharing, fredthe internet lowers the threshold for solidarity and for having your newsletter, power, paper, media, or country.i’m less interested in having my own country — and more interested in how people are starting to come together & be powerful together in new ways (p2p lending/sharing/renting/supporting; collaborating; starting businesses & bands).related: barlow’s at pdf last week: “The political system is broken partly because of Internet…t’s made it impossible to govern anything the size of the nation-state. We’re going back to the city-state…We can no longer try to run this country from the center. We’ve got to run it, just like the Internet, from the edges.”http://thehill.com/blogs/hi…
and you can have your own meetups too scott!
Coincidentally, I’ve recently been enjoying a book called Rimbaud in Abyssinia, an unconventional biography of the poet… and his character & history make me think a lot about the entrepreneurial experience & character. Highly recommended.
I can’t friggin believe I’m about to say this….Totally cool poem. But if I was sitting in a 8th graduation for my daughters and the teacher read a poem saying two people can give each other massages and sex. I’d scream out, “and AIDS they can give each other AIDS, and Babies that will ruin your lives!”And then I’d grab one of the boys randomly and publicly scar him for life. And then I’d put my somber face back on and enjoy the ceremony.
You are missing the point. Studies show teenagers who have been exposed to sex education and frank talks on sex and love early actually delay their sex lives. If that is what your concern is, as it seems to be. Bill Clinton talked to his daughter about sex and love when she was six. Because one day she asked. I think she has turned out just fine.
Bill Clinton talked to a lot of girls about sex and some of them didn’t turn out just fine! LOL
I was thinking something along those lines…sounds better coming from you.
🙂
I keep this poem under my mirror in my bedroom. It’s a great warning poem. (Since it is poem day and gift day)#64George GrayI HAVE studied many times The marble which was chiseled for me— A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor. In truth it pictures not my destination But my life. For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment; Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid; Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances. Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life. And now I know that we must lift the sail And catch the winds of destiny Wherever they drive the boat. To put meaning in one’s life may end in madness, But life without meaning is the torture Of restlessness and vague desire— It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid._Spoon River Anthology Edgar Lee Masters(Highly recommended, a great set of poems about Americans and Americana, it’s the epitaphs of the dead in a cemetry of a fake town called Spoon River, Ohio, circa Late 1800s-early 1900s)
“For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment”There is a Kahlil Gibran line that says something similar.http://www.katsandogz.com/o…”When love beckons to you, follow him,Though his ways are hard and steep.”
It doesn’t rhyme.
Yes, it has great rhythmic structure. Not all poems rhyme.
that was written over a hundred years ago Shana?
95 years young, Spoon River Anthology was published in 1915. In the anthology, almost every poem is a person in a graveyard of a fake town, 212 characters in total. The poems are replacement epitaphs. So there are references in the Anthology that are extremely old, and there are poems that are stories that interplay with each other (because the characters have inter-playing stories, they know each other.) There is even a character that claims to be Lincoln’s love interest! It’s the Our Town of poetry. Humongously interesting read.I was given this poem by a teacher of mine, in 11th grade. I was pulled out of lunch for writing tutorials (my writing was horrid to the point where there was a thought that there was LD issues, no one could explain it). I had to analyze the structure of this poem and write about it. I kept it because I had a good teacher, and it is still a very true poem, after all these years. Here is some more information about the Anthology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik…All the poems are available for free online, they are way out of copyright.
Speaking of Our Town…the line that haunts me is Emily saying, “Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?—every, every minute?”Then the Stage Manager responds “No. The saints and poets, maybe–they do some.” Now I have the poem you shared to haunt me too… 🙂
“Small town” life is incredibly rich in America. And it shows in ourliterature. We’re very into how unaverage average people are. It’s quiteincredible.
It really is quite incredible. Now, that you’ve pointed this out, I really see it. I’m so glad literature has captured this phenomenon…and other riches from small town life. (I spent my earliest childhood in a very, very small town and wouldn’t trade that experience.)
Did the boys grimace and yell “Ewww!” when they heard the word Sex?
not at that agemaybe a few years ago they would have
LOL so now they’re just old enough to be obsessed with it.Had to happen eventually.
From 1st Grade Moving Up Day, by Poet Mary Oliver:Let The Immeasurable ComeAnd, therefore, let the immeasurable come.Let the unknowable touch the buckle of my spine.Let the wind turn in the trees, and the mystery hidden in the dirtswing through the air.How could I look at anything in this worldand tremble, and grip my hands over my heart? What should I fear? One morningin the leafy green oceanthe honeycomb of the corn’s beautiful bodyis sure to be there.
that’s a nice one terezathanks for sharing it
…and this is Haiku, right?Either way, very, very nice.
That one’s not haiku. glad you like it!
Congrats to your son. He must be all over the World Cup.Great poem.”A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter; ten thousand, power and your own paper; a hundred thousand, your own media;ten million, your own country.”AVC stands at 10,000 right now. We do have our own paper. I have long suspected your draw much sustenance from this community. But the regulars do as well. There is much joy in commenting again and again. It is very real. I have had some great conversations here.
it’s about 150,000 a monthwe have our own media company
Glad to be on the show.
Fred, you’ve done it again …. created a blog post that fosters the most interesting comments! And what a great way to commemorate your son’s graduation. BTW congrats on that.
the community has risen to the occasion
We’re still rising!Congratulations to Josh and all of you.
Can two people fighting back-to-back really make their way through a mob? I’m skeptical.
You’ve not watched enough movies.. 🙂
Sure, if they’re Rangers. Used to do it all the time.Thumb to eye, palm to nose (break and drive into brain) and hand edge to throat.Repeat! You must see to fight and breath to win. Destroy sight, terminate breathing. Win.Useful skills if pitch meeting does not go well and you have to fight your way out. But, hey, I could be wrong.
Friday Poetry? Maybe once a month?
not going to commit to a regular schedule but it’s a good idea to have morepoetry
lol how about freestyle rap tournaments
i think it was a couple years ago i said fred was ChuckD and kid is FlavaFlav….all you are missing is your TerminatorX on the decks…..then “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” 🙂
Just read a review of “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” when it came out in 88….”Where most rappers present themselves as funky individualists, beating the odds of the status quo, Public Enemy suggests that rap listeners can become an active community, not just an audience. Although it overreaches, It Takes a Nation jams urban tension and black anger into the foreground; it reveals the potential for demagoguery as well as the need for change. ‘Whatcha gonna do/ rappers not afraid of you’, Public Enemy demands, and in 1988 it sounds like something more than idle entertainment.” —Jon Pareles
yes. folk and hip-hop is a big part of social change, 9/11 truth events are often great hip-hop marketing events as well.
Thanks. Nice poem.
Couldn’t help but think of The Warriors when i read this. Not sure if its the NYC connection or just the “can you dig it” vibe 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw9…thank for this poem. in fred we trust.
My poetic gifts to AVC:My favorite poem quoted on my first “real-ish” web site dreamsnare (I had geocities, live journal, and myspace accounts before it).William Butler Yeat’s poem “He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven”Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,Enwrought with golden and silver light,The blue and the dim and the dark clothsOf night and light and the half-light,I would spread the cloths under your feet:But I, being poor, have only my dreams;I have spread my dreams under your feet;Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. I had a bunch of personal poems when I was infatuated with a girlfriend in college, but I gave them all to her. Great lesson though, one sided infatuation pales in comparison to mutual love. The warmth that radiates from real love is indescribable. The closest thing I have to poetry now is singing in the shower, or while in the car with Michelle making up verses while we travel somewhere.
I love it. Thanks for sharing. We will tread softly on your dreams. In fact, support and reinforce them.
AVC Haiku #1:Log in every day.Comment for Fred’s attention.Shit. Disqus is down.
AVC Haiku #2:”Like” me, “Like” me, please!Even more than JLM.He sets a high bar.
They say that the mark of a man is to father children that are able to make their way in the world, to plant trees that will survive one’s allotted time and to build a great building which will last for a century.I already have a sandwich named after me at a very chi chi restaurant. Now I have had a poem written about me.I am ready to die.
Not so soon, JLM! We’re not ready for you to go! Turn away from the light!(BTW if you go to Taste of Tokyo in the West Village, you’ll see there’s a sushi roll called the “Tereza Roll”. Toshi pronounced it the Te-Lay-Za Roll. It’s very good)
Your Haiku talent is awesome. I have to go see Redhead Loose in the City in a couple of weeks and I will have to go to T o T. I think a sushi roll is way cooler than the Wrightsville Beach JLM crab cake sandwich.
Bummer. I checked online as it’s been ages since i was there. Closed in ’08!They were great. I used to go there multiple times a week. Even after I broke up with the boyfriend that lived next door. Some things survive a bad breakup and I was definitely holding on to custody of Toshi’s sushi.
Well let me know when you’ll be here bc I have a lots of experience to impart about being a Redhead Loose in the City. She’s having too good a time, I hope?
We’re meeting up the weekend after father’s day if you are around!

Tereza — poet laureate and Haiku princess of Fredland
Princess? Puh-leez, JLM. So pedestrian. You can do better. I know you can!Countess….Diva….Queen. Isn’t there some cool voodoo title you can dig up?There are many princesses. But there is only one Tereza, who rules the Haiku of Fredland. If anyone wants to throw out a name or a theme, I’ll try to come up with something.
Yo, Fredlanders, WTF? I miss one freakin’ day and ya’ll turn into POETS? POETS?I guess I am just not going to be able to go out of town ever again. LOLHow many before we get our own Army?
Check out my haikus down below, dude. There’s one dedicated to you!
We were already poets, JLM.We just got unleashed.Or maybe just unhinged.
Unhinged, definitely.I wish I could pitch my biz in Haiku.Or possibly in song.
A few years ago I was working in a big telco and a guy came to try to get a MVNO deal. He made a rhymed intro with another guy playing the saxo. It didn’t work out, the numbers didn’t fit. But it was fun and we went for some beers afterwards.

So are yours. I’m enjoying them as they roll out, Queen! 🙂
I could stick up flarf…alas, some of this kind of conceptual poetry is racy….(that’s what happens when you use spam and google searches to create poetry)
That was not spam,O Shana ma’amPerhaps you could not connect,With this analect[ I knew about and enjoyed Windows Haiku much before this post of Fred, FYI. ]Another Google search result for you:http://www.thefreedictionar…analect1. a fragment or extract from literature.
What a touching tribute to give to this community that you’ve inspired into being and continue to sponsor….and I suppose this could be called a gift that keeps on giving. Look at what you unleashed today (or unhinged). Exposing new facets of this community. So much fun. Thank you. I, for one, NEEDED this!

Love it. Wasn’t aware of that poem.Reminds me of ‘Desiderata’ – no mean feat.
My original reply seems to be missing – so, try again:Love it. Poetry is so oft neglected; it’s such a beautiful form of expression.Wasn’t aware of this poem – thank you – will be printed and pinned on my office wall, next to ‘Desiderata’.
thank you
the poem nails the importance of community and AVC is one of the best example of it’s own media and own country!now that many are sharing their poem…I would try to draft a poem that we hear from Fred and AVC.com right away …I like to meet you, the entrepreneurs;pitch me the service you built with a u-r-l…I like to share knowledge with you, the MBAs;come see me every monday at this b-l-o-g…I like to write everyday for you, the community;join me here with d-i-s-q-u-s…I like to participate with you, the portfolio;to ensure we build something d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s…I like to support for free, the open-source model;to create firefox for TV, b-o-x-e-e…and the next generation m-o-n-g-o-DB…I like to support you, the developers;and so advocate for open API as in t-w-i-l-i-o…I also like your creations, the musicians;tune to fredwilson.fm powered by t-u-m-b-l-r …If you like what I do,tell your followers with a t-w-e-e-t

Great poem – never seen this before – I’m sending this to my own daughter who just graduated.
What an interesting poem. I recently published one of my poems on my blog (I still like to rhyme)…first time I ever did because I consider most of my poem/song lyric writing private exercises. However, I do hope to make a few of my song lyrics into songs one day.Congrats on your son finishing 8th grade!
A couple of days ago my son “graduated” to middle school and the movement of the ceremony his teacher read the poem, this part of Lower Road, by Marge Piercy. When he read the poem, I was thinking about this community and what it means to me. So this is for you all.m3 zero
