Ammoudi Port

There's this cool port just past the town of Oia on the northern side of Santorini called Ammoudi Port.

We went there for lunch yesterday. There are a bunch of tavernas there that serve fresh fish and seafood. We ate at Sunset Taverna and it was excellent.

Then we walked around the rocks to a swimming hole and spent the afternoon sunning and jumping off the rocks into the sea.

There's a little church that is built into the rocks and you can swim out to it and jump off the ledge that the church is built into. Loads of fun. Brought me back to the swimming holes we used to swim in in Highland Falls when I was a teenager.

It was the highlight of the visit so far and we are headed back there for sunset and dinner tonight at another taverna called Catina.

Reminds me of a trip to Karpathos about 10 years ago. There was a seaside fishing/tourist village just like this one. Further up the mountain was the old village populated seemingly solely by women over 50 wearing traditional headscarves. Somewhere in between was a more modern village where everyone who owned a diner in New Jersey had a villa. The return flight was full of their families flying back for the school year.

if they're in season, you have to try the santorini tomatoes. At the tavernas they're often fried into fritters.

if you guys decide to do a fancier dinner one night (not that's there's any need, the tavernas are so good!) this is the restaurant i was talking about: http://www.oia-1800.com/
it's roughly near the top of the stairs down to ammoudi. Great local ingredients.
