The Eagles
We were having lunch at The Clam Bar on Thursday and they were playing non stop Eagles. The Gotham Gal so hates the Eagles and it was killing her. Lyin' Eyes almost caused her to abandon her steamers and hit the road.
So it was with interest that I read tonight, courtesy of John, that Jeff Tweedy shares a dislike for The Eagles. Well that may be too strong, but he did say they aren't a "particular favorite of mine". Seems like Jeff's gone PC on us.

Lyin Eyes is one of my faves. But I hate Don Henley and Glen Frey. It's funny how I can dig the tunes and hate the guys.
Chris won't even think about listening to the Eagles.

I loved the Eagles.
But I thought "The Long Run" Album was forced. You could feel the tension between the band members in the music on that album.
As a drummer, Eagles music is a lot of fun to play along to.
7 Bridges Road had some incredible harmony in it.
Don Henley's "Building the Perfect Beast" was a great solo album. Boys of Summer, Sunset Grill, All She Wants To Do is Dance.

The Dude from the Big Lebowski hates the Eagles too...

You might get a kick out of hearing the songs in a completely different context: E.g., the "Common Thread" anthology: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:knfpxqugld0e
(The allmusic star rating doesn't reflect what actual listeners thought about the album: Amazon people gave it 4.5 stars.)
(Of course, gotham gal might "hate" mainstream country, too.)
Isn't "hate" a strong word, by the way? "Killing her"? Sheesh. I think people sometimes act out when expressing their tastes.

Having been forced to listen to the Eagles at every high school kegger I attended (and that's a lot) and, without fail, having to endure a certain sect of the seniors getting arm and arm in a circle and singing along to Desperado and exclaiming how they "never wanted to graduate", I have to say I have landed on the side of the Gotham Gal on this one.
Although I used to serve iced teas to Glen Frey's wife when I worked a summer job at the golf course in Snowmass, and she was a totally lovely lady.

Lots to hate about Don Henley and Glen Fry, but the body of work is exceptional for the most part. Besides, let us not forget that Joe Walsh was in this band and anything Joe touches I'm a fan of.

"Lyin' Eyes" makes me throw up in my mouth a little, but the cover of "Desperado" on the Langley Schools Music Project is one of my favorite songs ever. It blows away the original despite being, or maybe because it is, sung by a nine year old. You'd think that would be gimmicky but it's not, it's poignant and beautiful.

And we know that Steely Dan hates the Eagles too: http://www.channel101.com/shows/view.php?media_id=1766
(Which is a good enough reason for me.)

The "I hate the Eagles" forms behind me. Only one person hates the Eagles more, The Dude:

Watch The Big Lebowski, better yet buy it and learn to appreciate The Dude.

There is no "The" in their name......oh boy!
Darn, forgot this bit of anal trivia from a terrific music newsletter by Bob Lefsetz.
http://www.lefsetz.com/
Bob wrote many pieces about how the Eagles were a joke. Their former manager wrote a response to the Bob piece, here it is, the anal part is the "there is no "The" in their name".
Bob: I was the manager of Eagles (there is no "The" in their name) for their first two albums. I am the cowboy in black on the Desperado cover. Your tribute to this great album is richly deserved. However, there is one error in your piece: the band and I did everything possible to break the record. We knew it was great. ATLANTIC RECORDS (Asylum Record's distributor) did NOTHING. They made a calculated decision and wrote the record off from day one. They couldn't understand the value of a concept album and even coming off two hit singles we got zero airplay. The Atlantic promotion guys also failed to deliver a hit on our third single "Peaceful Easy Feeling" one of the greatest songs of all time. This was corporate, not artistic failure. Pax. Hartmann
Trivia for the masses?
Cheers, Steve

of all the things to comment on.....the suckeyness of the Eagles. The most boring self absorbed group in the history of music. Every note painfully played in the same place time after time after time after time after time. I think the reason people have such feeling towards them is that they write terrific songs.
