Fun Way To Waste An Hour
Tom Watson has posted his choices for Rock's Greatest Covers and he gives Patti Smith's cover of Gloria the nod. Of course the answer is Hendrix' cover of Watchtower. Nothing beats that. He made that song his own.
But the most fun is reading everyone's comments to the post. I wasted an hour this morning with my comment and I think it may have gotten lost in the ether of comment spam filtering! [it's up there now]
Request: If you are in the mood to add your own tracks to this, please do that at newcritics so there will be just one thread.

Fred, it got stuck in the filter - it's up now - thanks for the great links. The comments have provided many side-roads of musical exploration for me already!

These are maybe slightly off topic but they are great covers. PJ Harvey & Bjork covering Rolling Stones "Satisfaction". Giant Sand covering Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On". Pavement doing Echo & the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon". Bjork covering "Gloomy Sunday".

I'm a huge Radiohead fan, and have to say that John Mayer of all people did a really interesting acoustic guitar cover of Kid A. Certainly not a "Top 10" list cover, but unique since Radiohead is a tough band to cover well.

Oh, wow, I always thought Watchtower WAS Hendrix's tune.
Though You Really Got Me by Van Halen deserves to be on the list, will check out New Critics.

I knew I should check out the list before commenting just now...
I just saw the list on NC and saw your mention of VH... that's probably my fave one.
