Forever Stamp

One of my favorite posts I ever did was My Uncle Tom, a post I wrote about my uncle Tom Engeman three years ago. Tom's an artist and his particular canvas is US Postal Service stamps. He actually has done way more than that, but it's his stamps that most people know him for.

My mom sent me his latest design, called Forever, which will be available for sale next week. Check it out.

It's not really forever though, is it? Just forever for local post. If it's used for international post then additional stamps will still be required in the future.

Cute idea, but I don't understand why international post has been excluded.

Surely the interest they accumlate on pre-paid stamps would cancel out any future increases in costs. (Even if it doesn't, the amount of these stamps that will be lost surely will.)

Just saw the bell with my family yesterday.

I'm gonna stock up on these and then arbitrage them when the rate goes up every 3 monhts

I think that the Posatl Service has thought of that - it's the image that won't change, but they'll do some sort of watermark or something every time the rate increases - or are they that stupid?

Anyway, Tom now has a legacy that will last a good while, that's nice.

William Ryall: it's domestic mail only for Postal Union rules. Stamps are required to have the name of the country (there's an official list of what names to use and what languages you must choose from) and the amount of postage. Of course as long as the stamp is only intended to be used domestically, you can do whatever you want.

One country is excepted from these rules. Can you guess what it is? No fair looking it up on wikipedia or with a search engine.

I plan on buying some even though I have a ton of 39 cent stamps on hand. Here is a short you tube video suggesting the revenues of this stamp be used in a sort of abstract way, an anti war message about the billions wasted on iraq:

How funny. My Dad just showed this to me tonight. I grew up with Tom. My Dad, Bruce MacGill, and he have been good friends for years. I just saw Tom at a party a couple years ago. He's still a character. When he was a photographer for The Washintonian, I modeled for him a couple times as a little girl. Tell him Donna (Bruce's daughter) said hi. He's a hell of an artist and a compassionate person.
