Getting Wider

My friend Joshua suggested two months ago that I make my blog page 950 pixels wide (up from 800 pixels).

I finally waded into the css sheet and did it. So now the center column is 550 pixels and the sidebars are the same width.

If anyone has a problem reading the blog now that it's wider, please let me know.

I like it better because I can get more content above the fold and it emphasizes the center column more.

I like it! Definitely easier to read.

I think it's a definite improvement.

One note to other readers: I had to hit "shift" while pressing the reload button to get Firefox to actually refresh the CSS file.

Ctrl+F5 ... for some of us.

Couldn't you just make the centre column fluid (so that it stretches to fit the available space)? That way it'll work for everybody.

I'm using a 1024x768 screen but because I have a sidebar on my browser I have to scroll horizontally now.

Thanks for the shift+reload tip above, same here - I had no clue:-(

As for the layout, I wonder why most blogs use fixed with at all... it feels like a waste of screen real estate not to stretch it to whatever is available...

I see proportional widths: 20% - 60% - 20%

Text is easier to read if the user doesn't have to scan long distances to orient themselves back to the beginning of the next line. I suspect the reason most blogs stick to a 800x600 or at most, 1024x768 layout is because both are highly readable.
