Golden Smog at Bowery Ballroom

The Gotham Gal and I went to see Golden Smog last night at The Bowery Ballroom. We ran into a bunch of friends and family including my brother Rod and his wife Karen. We had a good view of the show from the balcony where I captured this video of their cover of Bowie's Starman. I also uploaded a video of their new song Frying Pan Eyes to my YouTube account in case you are interested in that one too.

Funny how a clip can encapsulate an issue. As I watched and enjoyed the performance, I couldn't help wondering what the reaction of the copyright owners would be (if memory serves, Bowie securitised his publishing rights for a tidy sum some years ago).

Will this promote sales of the original song - unlikely? Will it increase sales of Golden Smog's version (I don't know if it even exists)? Or will it merely promote sales of Golden Smog's material (in which case should they share some of their royalties with Bowie's owners)?

It seems to me that for every copyright issue on YouTube and similar sites, there will be unique considerations and that seems like a legal minefield to me.

I guess there was no Tweedy. It also appears there is no bass player in GS. I hate that.

There is indeed a bass player.....would be none other than the marvelous Marc Perlman (from the Jayhawks). He's probably just lurking in the background on this....
