Great Lecture Tonight

Dan Gillmor is giving a lecture tonight up at Columbia on "trends in new media".

I had breakfast with Dan today and got a preview of what he's thinking about and going to talk about tonight.  I can't make it, but I wish I could.

Dan is one of the really great thinkers about media, the internet, community, and journalism and if you are interested in this stuff and are looking for something interesting to do tonight, I can't think of a better way to spend an hour than by listening to Dan talk about grassroots journalism.

The event will be held in the Columbia Journalism School's Lecture Hall, beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture and Q&A at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Good timing, Fred. I'd been planning to go to this and now I'm extra interested to go and here what Dan has to say about the purchase of his former employer, the Mercury News, by MediaNews that was announced yesterday. For anyone who's interested and can't make it, I'll do a right-up of the talk and Q&A on my blog littlescrapsofpaper.blogspot.com.

I have to say: what exactly is so innovative about bayosphere? There was like 1 article a month on that site.

It would be sweet to see this thing podcasted. Then we could all "make it." :) Any chance of that happening?

Matt, good question. I think Dan would agree with you that he didn't really achieve what he wanted with the site, but he still has a lot of interesting ideas worth checking out.

Jon, it was recorded. They put up audio of the November panel with Craig Newmark et. al so I imagine they'll do the same for this one. Not sure when, but check in here: http://snipurl.com/psc2

I did make it last night and, as promised above, wrote up my notes at http://snipurl.com/psc8.
