Nuggets

Dan_baird I am going to do something a bit strange and blog a record I've never listened to.

That's right. I have never heard this record, Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired by Dan Baird.

So why am I blogging about it?

Because I keep getting recommended this record, in last.fm (neighbor radio), in amazon.com (customers with similar searches purchased), and on Jackson's blog.  That's a pretty strong set of recommendations in my book.

So why have I never heard it?  Well I didn't buy it when it was made in the early 90s and now it's not available on Amazon.com, iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, or Yahoo! Music Unlimited.  I suppose I can head down to the used record stores on Bleecker Street but that's not my style.

If anyone knows where I can get this record online (and not used), I'd love to hear about it.

It's supposed to be really good.

UPDATE:  I am currently bidding on a "like new condition" used CD of this record on eBay, inspired by Chris Fralic's comment.  Wish me luck.

I've got the CD - bought it new when it first came out. Baird was the lead singer for the Georgia Satellites and this album is very consistent with the Satellites tunes, twangy Southern rock with a great sense of humor.

I still play it frequently.

Amazon Stores does have a couple of new copies available - but they are pricey. If you want to sample Baird you might try checking Itunes for his current band The Yayhoos. It should be much more available.

I could email you a couple of MP3s from Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired. I think borrowing a couple of songs from an out of print album falls well within fair use.

Drop me an email if you like me to do that.

It is really good. In fact It's my favorite 90's release, hands down. It is hard to find. I found a copy for Tony Alva when I was in Atlanta, but that's Dan's hometown.

If you like the golden age of the Stones (68-73), The Faces, the New York Dolls, and just straight up good time rock n roll, you'll love this record. I always come back to it. Dan Baird has a website -

- he's got alot of downloads, mostly live stuff. 'Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired' and 'Buffalo Nickle' are great records, 'Nickle' being even harder to find.

Can't recommend Baird enough, and his current incarnation is called The Yayhoos:

Not to whet your frustations, but there's also a great out of print live Dan Baird album that was recorded in some such Nordic country and is absolutely in my top 10.

Would also be happy to send you some MP3's, if your conscience allows. But if you get a few elsewhere, INSIST on "Dixie Beauderant." It's the story of a redneck teenage runaway who enters a wet T-shirt contest. It's got that loose "last song on the album, so we're gonna muck around vibe," and it puts everything The Faces ever recorded to shame.

Fred,

If you can't get your hands on it, I'll head back to Eat More Records this weekend where Jackson found my copy.

Eat More Records rocks!

'Dixie Beauderaunt' is my second fave on the record, 'Julie & Lucky' is tops.

If Fred asks, I was planning on sending Dixie, I Love You Period, and Julie Got Lucky.

If those 3 don't make you a Baird fan, you will never be a Baird fan.
