MP3 of the Week
One of the many bands I have discovered on last.fm is Wolf Parade.
They are from Canada and sound a bit like Arcade Fire, but they are not a "clone" and I like their music a lot.
My favorite song is called Shine A Light and here it is:

Wolf Parade are amazing (they definitely have the best album of 2005 by my standards). And if you like them, listen to some Modest Mouse. And since I'm throwing recommendations, get yourself some Broken Social Scene as well - you'll like it.

Of all these "next big thing" bands, there seem to be three tiers of them:
- Ones that really don't live up to the hype at all: The Von Bondies and The Artic Monkeys come to mind. The song C'mon C'mon by the Von Bondies is one of the best songs of the past five years, but a band cannot live on a single alone: (if you want to hear it go here: http://www.musiccherry.com/archives/2006/01/the_von_bondies.htm )
- Bands that have some really obvious talent, but who didn't take the time to make an album that will be a classic. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Bloc Party (though I know you love them, Fred) fit here perfectly. Silent Alarm has the strong first half of any album since the Joshua tree imo, BUT the second half is all B-sides.
- Bands that took the time to make nearly perfect albums:
1) The Arcade Fire: Band most deserving of the hype.
2) Wolf Parade: These guys have the best melodic instinct since possibly the beatles, but they hide it really well. This album will last.
3) The National: "Alligator" is the album of 2005 that both aimed high and hit its mark. I feel bad posting just one song because the effort as a whole is what makes this band so worth it. The attention to detail on this record is almost too much to comprehend in less than 50 listens. Of course, that also makes it hard to enjoy the first time around so here's the easiest song to enjoy on it:

beware: the chorus uses the F-word repeatedly, but without it being obscene (imo).
