Posting, Subscribing, Tagging AND Search
I left something important out of my posting, subscribing and tagging post that I did in early August.
There is a fourth pillar of the blogging movement and that is search.
That became obvious to me last night as I slept on Google Base.
Google Base is a web service that allows users to post listings (and probably a lot more) to a Google operated database that Google will crawl and add to their index. John Battelle asks a good question and that is will the rest of us be able to crawl Google Base?
Regardless of the answer to John's important question, this means whenever you post something to Google Base, it appears in Google Search.
I haven't seen Google Base, so I don't know if it allows a user to maintain their own page in the service. I don't know if you can subscribe via RSS to a user's page in the service. I don't know if you can tag items and subscribe to those items.
Assuming you can do all of those things, then posting a listing to Google Base is blogging in my definition of blogging.
If Google Base is simply a way for people to enter listings into Google Search service (like Adwords is a service to enter ads into Google Search), then it is not blogging in my definition.
And that's where the rub is.
Because community is where the action is in classifieds.
According to my friend Mark Pincus, the founder of classifieds community Tribe.net (who has already blogged his thoughts on Google Base):
People are looking for the best leads. They will go where the time/good lead ratio is the lowest. Good leads are driven by community which reduces time and identity lets you increase the trust around leads which reduces time too (and increases safety).
The community model that Mark talks about is the foundation of Craigslist. Posting a listing to Craigslist isn't really blogging either but they have built a community there anyway.
I think if Google is simply aggregating user listings, like it aggregates text CPC ads, then Craigslist has less to fear from Google Base. If Google Base is going to build a community, like Tribe or MySpace, then everyone has a lot to fear.
I suppose we will know soon although to date Google's efforts in community have been miserable failures.
eBay, on the other hand, is screwed.
As Mark talks about in his post, and as John Battelle does in his, we are seeing a movement toward free and open listings. Everyone is crawling everyone. Listings are a commodity. Community is what matters.
The paid model is dying quickly. Maybe eBay should become freebay.

Aggregator meets originator meets octopus of giant reach meets adopter of 2.0 feaures meets end-game. Enter Octogoogle.

google base is throwing a 403 "forbidden" error this morning -- what's up with that?
Posted by: jim santo | October 26, 2005 at 07:39 AM
With all due respect, if community is what matters then eBay is certainly not screwed. They have by far the largest community of people interested in transacting, a credibility system that creates a layer of trust (not perfect but far better than anything out there) and one of the most defensible business models out there.
Let's not forget Yahoo and numerous other startups poured hundreds of millions of dollars into auction sites and came up with nothing. That is because buyers attract sellers who attract more buyers.
Who cares if listings are commoditized? Bidders will pay for prominence and eBay will make even more money that way (see eBay keywords).
p.s. Don't forget they also own a quarter of Craigslist. So they have the world's largest marketplace, which continues to grow strongly (despite if Wall St occasionally gets ahead of itself), and investments in other leading community related enterprises. Google has a 403 forbidden page. Just because someone does something new doesn't mean an old thing has to die.

Craigslist is big only in the USA. Google is aiming the world. Scale matters.

"With all due respect, if community is what matters then eBay is certainly not screwed."
I completely agree. Becoming "freebay" is a ridiculous proposition (not to mention suicidal for the company), although there may be a case for lowering fees. The eBay execs need to realize that eBay is there to serve the community - right now, they seem to think that it's the other way around.
Anyway, Google Base looks intriguing, and it'll be interesting to see if that data really can be crawled by the rest of us.

The current excitement over 'community' is exactly analagous to the initial 'dot com bubble' excitement over 'eyeballs', and over length of time spent on a site. It's just as misconceived.
The only thing measures of 'engagement' are actually measuring, when a particular service is new on the web, is the excitement level among early adopters. As that excitement level rapidly fades most of us then gravitate to a winner, which typically turns out to have a relatively uncluttered interface, allowing us to MINIMIZE our level of engagement with that service.
This is the most important thing Google did and does somewhat less well today - you're in, you're out, you got your result in almost no time at all, conceding a minimum amount of interaction with either Google's collective ego or its business model (their success is driven by the fact that they utilize that minimum interaction relatively efficiently).
From a competitive point of view this means that your 'highly involved community' is very likely to abandon you fast as soon as an acceptable 'low involvement' method of accessing the same service or content becomes available. I give full credit to the guys at Craigslist for realizing this!
The driving factor here is that every day we have more and more tasks we try to get done via the web, and yet the number of hours we want to spend at the keyboard is no longer rising sharply. The pressure to find faster ways to get specific tasks done without lingering is going to be relentless as far out as I can see.

My take on it is that Google Base is exactly what it alludes to; a database. So if you can wrap your mind around it, Google Base becomes a way for users to define specific types of data thats it. If they wanted to build a commerce site my guess is that they would have built new types of functionality on top of froogle.
How is this significant? Well I can begin to define anything that was previously put in a DB on my website: Blog postings, pictures, products, people. Whatever kind of information I have, I can save it in Google base without even having a personal website.
Google wants to make the hosting, and discovery of information as easy as possible. The questions I have in regards to this are:
1. If this is in fact simply a Google hosted database, is that too abstract for the general user? People will want to use this will need to have SOME TYPE of context.
2. Will I be able to suppress information that I put in this DB from search?
3. Will this content in the Google Base be quality controlled in some way? If people start posting poor comment and this appears in traditional search results, this would greatly impact Google as a search engine.
But then again, maybe it is as simple and boring as simply being an ebay or craigslist competitor. That would certainly be a shame and in my mind very likely a failure.

This isn't about Community it's about MyGoogle, which will eventually be the
way they lock you in. Google has realized that if you organize things searching will be better overall. They are not trying to
compete- this is all media hype. I believe they are looking to create another
competitive advantage - switching cost. They want to do what AOL did years
ago. AOL locked people in with dial-up/email and Googles going to lock people in with WIFI and MyGoogle. Google also wants to be your hard drive and they are looking to build the worlds biggest operating system, database by database and make it universally accessible. They want people to start storing inventory in the same way del.icio.us stores user bookmarkings. Google wants to organize your information and Microsoft wants to help you organize.

While eBay may have issues of its own, Google does one thing very, very well and is mediocre at the rest.
Froogle did not kill any of the other shopping sites; Orkut is a blip on the "community" scene that is 2005's version of the online pet food space; Google News is neat but not great; Gmail is now a 2nd tier offering; Google Talk is throuroughly average and late to the game.
Despite the share price froth and the admittedly amazing financial results, where else is Google "changing the world as we know it"? Andrew raises a great point about MyGoogle being their goal and thus aren't they guilty of building a new walled garden? Welcome back to the mid-90s...now with Broadband!

Tramadol is a Pain killer abused by many, Huraaa for being a pharmacy student.an effective pain reliever (analgesic). Its mode of action resembles that of narcotics, but it has significantly less potential for abuse and addiction than the narcotics.
