One of the best albums to come out of the 1990s is It's A Shame About Ray from the Lemonheads.
Evan Dando probably had too many Drug Buddies and his career went downhill pretty fast. But this debut record, which landed on our CD player in 1992 stayed there for a couple years and makes a cameo every now and then, is great punk pop.
The big hit on this record is It's A Shame About Ray and the cover of Ms. Robinson also got some airplay. But the softer songs, like Drug Buddie and the country twinged Hannah a& Gabi do it most for me.
I particularly like the backing vocals from Juliana Hatfield on this record. I like the songs where she sings the most.
All in all, its a Rockin' Stroll.

When I was living at 71 Broadway in the days following 9/11, I met Evan in the only functioning deli near the building. I was carrying my SG and he came up and asked me if I was in a band. I had no idea who he was, but when I asked him the name of his band he said, "The Lemonheads."
He was kind of quiet and super nice. Turns out he lived three floors above me. He invited me to come up and play some of his vintage SGs.
Unfortunately, I had had enough of lower Manhattan at the time (I was there on 9/11 and it was just getting too difficult to look out my window at Ground Zero), so I moved a few days later. Never did manage to play his cool old SGs.
About a year later, I was set up on a blind date with his ex-girlfriend from high school. That was the only date I've ever been on when I decided not to mention my band.

The song "It's a Shame About Ray" was in heavy rotation when I started working as a DJ at a little commercial radio station in Ithaca, NY back in the day.
What a great song! One of the ones you'd crank up whenever you got to play it; it never got old.
"I've never been too good with names/but I remember faces..."
I'd forgotten about this tune. Brings back some good memories (like doing overnight shifts, 2am-6am, then buying a pack of Marlboro lights as I walked home while the sun came up).

This is without a doubt - one Janine and my favorite albums of all time. not a bad song on it.
The most interesting fact i learned about this album while falling in love with it was that Evan Dando had a songwriting partner on that album. An Australian guy named Tom Morgan from a group called Smudge. I ended up getting their ep tea toast and turmoil, and you can definitely hear the similarities.

If you like the Juliana songs on the Lemonheads record, you should check out here solo stuff. Ranges widely in quality, but "Become What You Are" is a great companion to "It's a Shame About Ray." And her more recent stuff, "Beautiful Creature," and the more agressive "Total System Failure" are both very good. She has two almost-new albums that I haven't bought yet, but are worth checking out. And "Bed," from the late 90s, is actually quite good too. Juliana is an equally great song writer, imo.

I have never forgiven them for releasing their cover of Mrs. Robinson. They played on the same bill as The Horse You Rode In On back in 89, and consequently stole the idea from The Horse. The Horse does it better, and you can see them do it at TEDSTOCK on sunday.
