A Blast From The Past
I was loading up Rhapsody this morning and saw a "new release" on the front page.
Hmm. I thought they were long gone.
Back in the mid 90s, we used to listen to the Fugees all the time. They had the coolest sound. In fact their record from 1996, The Score, is on my Top 50 list.
Then Lauryn Hill put out The Miseducation which was a great record and then proceeded to disappear.
And now they are apparently back, ten years later. Their new single is OK, nothing amazing, but I'll wait for the full length record, due sometime early next year.
I sure hope they can bring that cool sound back and do it right.

Fugees are indeed back, but I'm maintaining a cautious approach until I hear the finished product. This is very much a situation of financial necessity, Praz/Wyclef and Lauryn have all lost their luster (not to say Praz ever had it), and they're trying to cash in. Nothing wrong with that (we're all in the profit game after all), but when you consider the bad blood between this trio, I'd be surprised if this album comes close to The Score.

What's the deal/scoop on the bad blood anyway?
I loved The Score and some of Wyclef and Lauryn's solo stuff that followed.
What I like about the Fugees and in particular The Score is that Praz, Lauryn, and Wyclef each have a very individual style that just happens to jive so well when mixed. Lauryn's flow and writing were really outstanding too.
Admittedly I'm surprised to see them mentionned on this blog since most of the music referenced here is completely different (I like it very much too, so much so that it's really _the_ reason I'm subscribed to Positively 10th Street). Will you start referring some niche hip hop sound as well?
