Categories

I have never been a big fan of categorizing my posts.

I do it and I have a few categories but I'd much rather use tags to do the work of slicing and dicing my posts.

I look with envy at the people who use WordPress and the way they can tag their posts with ease.

I don't like the idea that the categories in TypePad have to be defined in advance and that you have to do some work to add a new one.  Tagging is much easier and simpler.

So I keep my categories to six.  And I have kept them that way for almost two years.

But I did change the name of two categories today.

New Music was changed to My Music.  That was long overdue.

Presidential Politics was changed to Politics.  I don't post much on politics anymore, but when I do, I don't want to limit my views to the President.

If by chance any of my readers use anything that is driven off specific category names, please make note of this change.

fred,

your lack of ability to tag posts has nothing to do with not using wordpress. Movable Type has a number of plugins that allow you to tag posts in del.icio.us style. eg:

http://www.sixapart.com/pronet/plugins/plugin/tags.html

So, it's not about wordpress, it's about the fact that you use a hosted service for your blog. This is great and takes care of a lot of things but is just less flexible.

People who want more control host/install their own software.

Denton uses a plugin that does what the WordPress plugin does -- but that's for Movable Type v. Typepad.
When I made the switch, my son converted all my old categories to tags and now I can add them at will. I still haven't figured out the grammar of tags -- is it for (a) navigation to more content like this, (b) navigation to outside content -- e.g., technorati or delicious tags, (c) a way for me to find my stuff; it's all those things but it's harder than i'd have thought to decide how big or how granular to get with tags.

Help. I got a question.

I'm pulling together a Wiki for New Orleans communities. I've not got some friends from the School of Information at U of M helping me out. We're hoping to launch the site Monday.

It's like about.com for New Orleans communities. A tech savvy person becomes a "Community Guide" and helps that community by creating web pages. Many communities are without their IT, and many communities never needed IT before, because New Orleans is so cozy.

Can you help me by answering, what are the best online web applications? For groups? For todo lists? What free tools are available that people can use to organize and rebuild.

Or just forward this question to someone who's willing to blog about it. I'll check back later, or e-mail me directly, or edit this wiki page.
