Let Her Speak
Tom Watson has been on a mission to create a groundswell of public outcry over Pakistan's attempt to silence Mukhtaran Bibi.
And he's getting results.
Over 100 bloggers have written about this story.
If you take the combined audience of those 100 blogs, I'd bet that millions of people have read about this story on blogs this week.
I don't have much to add to what's been written other than to say that I agree with Tom and support his efforts.
This is an important case that mixes human rights with womens rights. We live in a flat world now. We must care about how people are treated all over the world.
So I urge all of you to pay attention to this story and talk about it and blog about if that's what you do.

Right on Fred... Thanks for posting this important story.

Thanks for writing this.
Shouldn't our economic policies--if "We must care about how people are treated all over the world"--reflect that? Should we do business with India on the same basis as Canada, for instance, given thousands of girls are sold into sex slavery there every year and the government looks the other way?
Should we do business with China on the same basis as we do with England, given the government imprisons and executes democracy advocates, supresses speech, and engages in illegal trade behavior as a matter of course?
It's easy to moralize over a single person in a country where we have little "national interest" other than keeping a lid on the nukes and occasional terrorist. It's a lot harder when it means putting our economics where our values supposedly are and suffering the slings and arrows of higher prices because we choose to stop subsidizing human rights abuses by looking the other way just to get a better deal at Wal-Mart.
It would be great to see you leading on human rights as it relates to economics. Thanks for this important post.

It's too bad not everyone is as free as we are in North America.
