The Table Cloth

There is a very interesting weather pattern that develops in Cape Town in the early summer months.

Helmar, in his comment to my Getting There post, calls it the "Cape Doctor".

Whatever the name, its this killer wind that comes howling down from Table Top Mountain and the Tweleve Apostles.  It was blowing at least 50 miles an hour here in Camps Bay last night.

When this wind condition develops, a really cool thing happens.  The clouds just sort of hang out on top of the mountain and drift over.  It's called the "Table Cloth" and we had a great one yesterday over the Twelve Apostles.  Very Cool.

I've never seen the wind blow the clouds so hard over the Table Mountain as it did yesterday. The picture is cool, but a video would reveal how strong the wind really was. Obviously put a stop to our volleyball playing in Camps Bay. :)

Tip for anybody else wanting to visit CT: the "Cape Doctor" goes on holiday towards the end of summer. So do the hot temperatures. Best time to visit CT is clearly March-June. Days are a bit shorter, but it's not so hot, not so windy, and not so full anymore. And the light in the morning and afternoon is just out of this world.

Oh, another priceless tip: the city has installed a lot of permanent speed traps (those dark green boxes on a pole) in and around town, plus they are using radar to trap speeding motorists. This is their way of ensuring the Christmas kitty is full, and that people who drive a little fast get majorly annoyed and out of pocket. So "The City that works for you" is more "The City that screws you too". Be careful!
