Rilo Kiley
I love finding out about cool new bands. Rilo Kiley fits that bill.
They've got an alternative/country/rock sound that is somewhere between Pavement and Bettie Serveert.
While the guitar playing is great, the thing that really does it for me is singer Jenny Lewis' vocals. If I didn't know, I'd swear it was Carol van Dijk from Bettie Serveert, and I love Carol's vocals.
Here are a couple tracks from their best record, Execution of All Things.
Rilo Kiley also has a new album, More Adventurous, that made Amazon's Best of 2004 list, and that's how I found out about them.
I hope you like them.

Fred,
Rilo Kiley's great. One place to check out new and interesting music is KCRW's 'Sounds Eclectic' program. That's how I've found a bunch of cool stuff, Rilo Kiley included. Here's a link.

Funny how your tastes often coincide with that of my 16-year-old daughter! She saw Rilo Kiley, her very favorite band of the moment, along with Tilly & Wall, another interesting band, several months ago and loved them both. Anna rarely leaves a concert without meeting the stars and Jenny was no exception. She said Jenny was genuinely delighted to have such a devoted fan. The thing that most impressed Anna was how Jenny could express an enormous depth of feeling when singing a very sad song (unfortunately I don't remember the song in question). She asked Jenny if it was about a real event and she said that it was just a made up story, which made her performance seem all the more remarkable.
We also caught Rilo Kiley at Amoeba Music during a visit to San Francisco in September. Good, upbeat stuff for kids of all ages.

Fred,
Check out The Dears, a Montreal band. I saw them live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. They were supposed to play right before Snow Patrol (the headline act), but Snow Patrol canceled and The Dears ended up playing for far longer than they had originally planned. Snow Patrol is coming back in January.
