Gmail Revisted

During this summer I posted a bit about Gmail.

I started with the assertion that Gmail wasn't going to kill Yahoo! mail or Hotmail.  I think email addresses are pretty sticky for most people, like phone numbers are.

Well we've got some data, thanks to our portfolio company Return Path, and it looks like it confirms my instincts on this one.

Gmail is adding email users at about 1/20th the rate that Yahoo! and Hotmail add accounts and they are not taking that many accounts away from these two email giants.

But Gmail still has its closed but viral customer acquisition policy: You only get in by getting invited. That's growing, of course (I still have spare invites and not enough friends, apparently) but it's slower than opening up the doors to all -- including spammers (which, I'm guessing, is why Gmail is still closed: I'll bet they're getting more actual use and fewer abandoned accounts; I have one Gmail account and a dozen unused, overspammed accounts at Yahoo, Excite, MSN, etc.).

GMail doesn't really care about killing any of the email service providers. Google cares about one thing and that is sucking in information for the use of being the top holder, and provider, of information in the world. Check out the article, "Post-Google Earth" to learn more. They are already the best search engine, a.k.a. knowledge sucker and provider. What could their future plans include?

Google blew it in the short to midterm because they didn't realize how uninformed the general population was about the technical workings of the software running the ad programs. Microsoft and Yahoo! have the same privacy "invasions" that Google has, but they have never received backlash about the ones common to all three email services because they understand how the media works and how entrenched and scared the leaders (and opinion makers) are in that sector. The only way to successful introduce a replacement technology is to give the status quo a nice severance package. That doesn't always mean money either. They should have let the media act as if gmail was all but their idea (others have said that before and I don't see why it wasn't obvious to Google) and let the privacy groups come in to write the privacy documents pertaining to the gmail service.

I agree with the idea that the "invite only" portion of this skews the results, but I think the functionality of Gmail is what really hurts it.

When that gets better, people might switch. Otherwise, there's no way I'm switching from Yahoo!
