My ISP Hacked?

One of my first reads every morning is Jeff Jarvis' Buzzmachine.  I don't always agree with Jeff, but I find him provocative, intelligent, and entertaining.  That's a winning combo.

So just now, 5:40am, I went to Buzzmachine and got "RX Prescription Meds" instead.  I was offered Viagra and Phentermine for $89, Soma for $69, and Ambien for $169.

I go elsewhere on the Internet and the same thing happens to me.  Some sites are fine, but many are not.

It turns out its some kind of DNS hack. 

This is outrageous.  I am adding DNS hacking to my Internet Axis of Evil.  This stuff is really bad.

UPDATE:  This one's a thorny problem.  I didn't think it was spyware because I am using Firefox.  I briefly thought it was the Internet itself that had been hacked, and sent about a half dozen emails to friends whose sites were impacted.  But Jarvis told me he didn't have an issue connecting.   So then I thought it was my machine, but then I realized every machine in my house had the same issue.  Macs, PCs, etc.  I doubt its a virus infecting every machine in the house.  I suspect its my ISP at this point.

Did you get a completly new page and url or just pop up ads? - if the latter, just search for some spyware removal stuff mate...

Not sure on the former but the same spyware stuff would most likely cover it..

Forget about hunting for spyware, if you're seeing the same issue on Macs in your household, it's doubtful it's spyware-related. I agree with you, it's likely something else.

Do you use a broadband router? What make/model? It's possible it got cracked and someone messed with DHCP-assigned DNS settings. Though this all seems unlikely, especially if you have several machines on your network and you haven't rebooted them in a while.

Let's do some probing:

on one of your macs, open-up the terminal application at:

Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal

at the prompt type:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

if you care to, send me the results to frenchy @t gmail.com

then try:

nslookup www.buzzmachine.com

the answer should be: 63.247.142.190

what do you get?

Is the issue still occurring at the time of your reading this post? If you send me the above info, i might be able to do some more probing.

This is definitaly a problem with your ISP's DNS servers. We're having the same problem and we have our OWN DNS server...yuck, what a mess. Still clearing it up!!

I actually am JUST having the same problem. I just looked it up on google to see if I could actually find anything useful.

I can NOT access www.livejournal.com at ALL, and I'm like addicted to it. It's getting to be a problem. All my friends can get into it, I just can not. It's says the "Webpage is unavailable".
