Smart Liberals

There is a great conversation going on in the comments section of my Alternative Energy post.

It should probably more appropriately be going on at the Alternative Energy blog, but it is where it is and that's that.

One commenter made a good point that I wanted to highlight. He said about my posts on this subject;

i'm just trying to put some real hard engineering into a discussion by some fairly smart (if very liberal) people... cause when smart liberals start talking in the abstract, things go to hell very quickly (great society, etc)... you guys have your hearts in the right place and great intentions... success.. not so much

I wear the liberal label with as much pride as the smart label. But I am bothered by the "great intentions but no success" label. If that means we liberals need to get smarter about this stuff, I am game. In fact, since I posted about Alternative Energy yesterday, I've gotten a lot smarter already.

Keep the comments coming. It's the best thing about blogging.

"The Great Society" sure was a failure huh? All that b.s. legislation about civil rights, utter failure.

"But I am bothered by the "great intentions but no success" label."

You talk about independance (great intentions) but say you wont invest in alternative resources (no success). There are many of us that are doing all we can to reduce dependance so do something about this or DONT COMPLAIN!

I'm not one of the smart ones when it comes to alt energy, but I have a few ideas about providing relief to our dependancy on foreign sources that are sure thing solutions. Drill in Alaska, fire up that nuke plant that is lying dormant out on Long Island, and all others that aren't falling apart. Both of these short term solutions could ease the burdan of most who frequent this blog. I live in Georgia, the non-Russian one, and we burn moonshine. It doesn't clog the fuel injectors of my Boxster and it's safe for the environment.

Nukes for electricity, domestic oil for our cars. That'll give you smart ones time to figure out how to make the cold fusion thing work.

Fred thanks for featuring my blog. After reading one of your posts I also added a feedburner feed. I didn't understand the importance of feeds before reading your post.

Energy plays a fundamental role in all our lives but it's taken for granted when it should be at the top of the political agenda. One of my main aims in starting the altenergyblog.com was to stimulate discussion. I thoroughly agree with you that comments are what make blogs interesting. In fact it was through posting comments on other blogs that I first got into blogging.

As to putting your money where your mouth is, I think the first individual step most of us can make is in where we source our energy. Here in London, England I found a company that generates 100% of its electricity from renewable sources (principally wind & solar power) and have switched to them (a benefit of deregulation).

Doing this is going to cost about $50 a year extra and I see it as an investment in the future.

I plan future posts about simple and important steps we as individuals can make and welcome suggestions. I also plan to learn more about alternative energy investment opportunities.

re: The Liberal Label

I don't use "liberal" as a label in international forums (i.e. anywhere on the web) because it doesn't mean the same thing outside the US as it does within.
