My Media Paradox

I live in a world where the traditional media outlets have been aggregated into powerful networks that turn out what is essentially propaganda.

I live in a world where the best news program on TV is on the Comedy Channel.

I live in a world where Ted Turner, the creator of many of the most influential news outlets of the latter part of the 20th century, says media has become too concentrated in too few hands.

I live in a world where everyone can have their own media channel (call it a blog or whatever else you want).

I live in a world where the lives of the Hilton sisters is more important to the media than the lives of the two income family that can't afford health care.

I live in a world where a presidential candidate can raise more money in $25 contributions over the Internet than in $5 million fundraisers at the Waldorf.

I live in a world where the administration can fool a liberal paper into being its “echo chamber” for it war drumbeat.

I live in a world where the news of a Governer’s planned resignation breaks on a website and a blog hours before it is announced.

So, where are we headed with all of this? My hope is that we are headed toward a world that is more transparent, honest, open, and truthful than the one we live in today. But many of these facts point me to the opposite conclusion. It’s a real paradox for me.

I live in a world where, when I turn for information about global warming -- good hard-science information that I, a lay non-scientist, can read and understand -- I'm left with the belief that any book I turn to, any Web site I find, has got a hidden agenda. Can't trust the government-funded scientists, can't trust the industry-funded scientists; why, I'm not even sure I can trust academically-funded scientists not to have a pro-this or pro-that agenda that's hidden from view. What's a concerned citizen to do when it comes to an issue that purports to have at its base a set of questions to which science can speak?

I think the Daily show is the best news show on TV. I also get a lot of my information from Al Frankin. I guess I trust comedians more than media moguls. Every bit of information we get is somehow tainted a bit to make us think or fell the way the author wants us to.

I think we're heading for a world where the truth is even more difficult to determine, if not completely obliterated.

The other day, a friend sent me a link. It was to an MP3 file of a computer-generated British woman saying stuff about me. I could tell it was a computer, but how far is the technology from blurring the lines of distinction there? Five years? Three?

I've seen Photoshop manipulations that I honestly couldn't tell were real or fake. Same goes for video. Two recent videos purported to show the beheadings of Americans in Iraq. One was real, and one wasn't, yet the video that was real is the source of endless speculation among the Indymedia types: they think it was a CIA product, and have "facts" to back it up on numerous websites.

I've read very in-depth analyses on the web with back up references that turned out to be complete fallacies after thorough checking.

Nobody has the time, unless it's their job, to chase down all the facts. As we are forced to become our own editors from among the literally billions of potential sources, we'll all construct our own versions of the truth.

Which is what we do in our heads already.
