House Ads
I just added a section on the top right of my blog called "House Ads". I will use this section to promote things that are of interest, directly or indirectly, to me. There is no charge to anyone or anything I promote on this section, but I would like to get traffic reporting back to me in return. I am curious to find out if anyone actually clicks through on these house ads.

If you've got access to a server running PHP, you can track them yourself -
Get the code here
It's just a little script, but it works well for me

Two suggestions for your site.
1) Speedup the loading time. Your site seems to have (way) above average initial latency.
2) For the love of Christ, please quit creating links that automatically open another window.
Its just plain rude.
I can override this, but its annoying to have to remember to do it.
Furthermore, most real browsers (ie. not the POS from Mr Softie) have tabs. If you're not familiar with any of this then perhaps you should dl Firefox from www.mozilla.org.

Well, the ad worked. I just signed up. Crain's owes you commission.

As somebody who's studied blogvertising closely, particularly Blogads, this is my two cents:
Yeah. Blogads work. But not like direct mail. I don't have a problem with that. But a lot of advertising folk will.
Corporate media sees their energy (their memes) as waves (TV waves, radio waves etc.). Now it's no longer about waves. It's about particles. Little digital packages of goodwill being spread, like pollen, from one willing host to the next.
Blogads understand particle theory well ;-)
Marx used to rant on about capitalists "owning the means of production". I'm playing with this phrase "owning the means of conversation". It's a privelege big companies still take for granted.
But once communication switches from wave to particle, such claims to ownership become redundant.
The opportunity, Fred, is in anything that helps big companies to switch from wave to particle as painlessly as possible.

"Houseads" are brilliant. I read your blog (and others) because I find what you think about interesting. I will take you house ads as personal referrals. Very powerful! Just be careful because in a certain sense you are putting your reputation on the line for what you promote.
P.S. If I wasn't across the country I would have definitely signed up for the talk.

You need an HD Radio ad and a link to crutchfiled.

Thanks for the HD Radio plug. We all admire VCs who practice what they preach and support their portfolio companies.
