Digital Radio (Continued)
I just bought a Panasonic HD Radio.
I was driving around Washington, DC this weekend and listening to a radio station that was promoting the fact that it was broadcasting in HD radio format. But I couldn't listen to it. HD Radio provides CD quality audio in the FM band, FM quality in the AM band, song, artist, title information, and traffic and weather data on the display.
I've been an investor in iBiquity Digital, the developer of HD Radio for the past five year.
I figure its time the dogs eat the dog food.

Hi Fred,
that's another fascinating issue with VC: don't you think that it would be a great thing if, after investing in a company (and before, if there's already a product), VCs whould become a user of the product, becoming accustomed to it and helping the team in making it better?
I know a lot of VCs that, beside lookings at numbers, business plans and other data, don't really know much about the products they invest in. Surely they should become the first users and evangelists...

The station Fred is referring is WHUR-FM, 96.3. They have an urban adult mix format, and are owned by Howard University. They have totally ran with the HD Radio promotion. When they flipped the switch to go digital, they had a huge press event and the Mayor's Office declared it "WHUR HD Radio Day" in Washington, DC. The same types of promos are beginning nationwide on other stations as the HD Radio rollout gains steam. (Also on in DC is WAMU 88.5, the NPR station and WWIN 99.5, urban format).
We are in the process of redoing our website to be more consumer friendly, so check back soon for easy access to all stations nationwide who are converting to digital. There's more than 300 in the process. It's pretty exciting for those of us close to it.
