What Is Blogging?

A good friend of my uncle's called me yesterday to talk about blogging. This woman runs a very interesting business and she wants to use blogging to connect to an extended network of people she works and collaborates with. She had heard from my uncle that he and his brother and sister (my mom) all read my blog and talk about it even though they have nothing to do with technology and venture capital. That was pretty interesting to her and she wants to harness the power of this technology for herself. I told her, "go for it".

Then she asked me how people will find out about her blog. I explained links. Links to me are the essential element of blogging. My wife, the Gotham Gal, blogs a lot, but doesn't really link much. I love her site, but it may not really be a blog. Because she is really broadcasting more than generating discussion.

So here's Rochel's blog. I hope it turns into something great.

And I hope Rochel gives me a link back :)

or you could always umm you know ... link some of your readers...... *cough* ....

or you know .... even reply to your comments ....

just sayen; :)

Blogging isn't just one thing. 0xdecafbad spews dozens of links each day, but doesn't really add much to them. He's an aggregator. Others treat it like an IRC window, but with a voice of one (or maybe a few for a group blog). Before the printing press, printing was the hand transcribing of very important documents (mostly the bible). After the press, printing was used for all kinds of things.

I try to create a little bit of knowledge, a little bit of curiosity, a little bit of story. I've got plenty of interesting stories to tell (for some reason the one about hydrofluoric acid accidents in my freshman applied physics lab has been especially popular in the blogsphere), and over twelve thousand bookmarks, so there ought to be some overlap there.

My hope is that a few people may find this information useful down the road. Kind of the encyclopedia of my life. Who knows.

Use google, never see a "blog". How find?
