Apple

I don't use a Mac. But I love Apple way more than i love IBM or Microsoft, the two companies most responsible for my laptop experience.

Why do i love Apple? As Seth Godin explains, because they are cool.

I like the new Apple stores too - my kids are naturally drawn in, because they're basically, quite cool. You feel like you're buying more than a digital music player with the iPod - you're buying an object that has some kind of intrinsic beauty (it also works great). Let's face it Fred, these guys wrote the book on post-millenium branding...

Here's an exercise, for anyone so inclined.

What is wrong with iTunes?

Ask 5 people who have used iTunes to list anything they can think of (verbally or literally). Limit discussion to near zero.

Include yourself as one. Include your son as one. If he hasn't used it yet, give him 3 or 5 dollars for iTunes, then ask.

Compare responses.

I work on a Mac all day ... I have a powerbook for travel ... I have a ipod for the ride to work ... and i also turned my windows xp into a mac ...

I like iTunes alot, but their reconnect for dropped internet radio stations doesn't work. I'm constantly poping the app to the foreground and reconnecting manually.

Y'know... I'd never admit this to friends with whom I have an never-ending battle about the benefits of Mac vs. IBM-clones.

But, I have to say it... Mac IS cool. They're pioneers in design and usability. And when it comes down to it, they seem to be years ahead of their competition when designing tools that are effective and easy to use. That includes iPods and iTunes, too.

I use IBM (actually Dell, but I don't wanna split hairs). I don't think I'll ever switch to Mac because my business and personal process is so entrenched in the IBM/MS way of doing things.

Sad, but true.
