Google, Barry Diller, Bob Pittman, Paris Hilton and Me

What do all those names have in common? Well, Michael Wolff thinks they are the signs that the "Internet" is back front and center in our society.

My daughther thinks its funny that her dad is mentioned in the same paragraph as Paris Hilton.

My friend and colleague Tommy thinks its good that I was mentioned in the same paragraph as Google and Barry Diller.

And I am mostly irritated that Michael got it wrong. Because I am not opening the doors of Flatiron again. And Flatiron didn't "sink". But I'll leave that alone.

Because Michael got the rest right. The Internet is back front and center in our society because its the most important thing going on socially and economically right now, with the sole exception of this problem we have with terrorists and the rest of the world hating us.

We said back in 1996 when we started Flatiron that the Internet revolution was going to be big and create massive changes in society very quickly. And it has. And its still happening. And there is still lots of money to be made.

The fact is we went through the frenzy and crash stages of the typical technological revolution (to steal Carlota Perez' words). And we are now going through the recomposition and synergy stages. And that's why I am "opening doors" again. But they are new doors, not old doors. And I am thrilled that someone as prescient as Michael sees that as important.

Comments

Okay, admittedly I'm biased; not only
was I Fred's partner for seven years,
more important, I continue to be his
friend. Here's my take on Michael's
latest: He's right in general; he's
just a little sloppy about the details.
Michael, as usual, confuses hyperbole
for cleverness. His description,
for example, of Flatiron winding down
in ignominy is just silly. There was
nothing shameful, dishonorable, or
personally humilating about Flatiron.
Perhaps what is more shameful is
Michael's painful and embarrassing
insecurity; then again, he has turned
that particular neurosis into a highly-read, and often very funny column. Moreover,
it's gotten him a regular table at
Michael's restaurant--something,
I know, we all secretly crave.

Where can I get in touch with Bob Pittman about a possible next chapter in his life?

What is so interesting in Bob Pittman's life? He's probably enjoying all his millions of Dollars is has made from AOL's stock bubble in the 1999s. Don't forget: He was the one guy who inflated the bubble. Steve Case probably was the master of the game, making even more money than him, but Steve did conceive the whole concept while Bob had only MTV to show off. In comparison, Bob is the biggest winner of this dirty game. I cannot believe that anybody in the world who still has some feeling of honesty will employ Bob in a position other than door man.

By the way: I never bought AOL stock. So I am much better of than Ted Turner whon lost most of his fortune. Me judgement therefore is not prejudiced.
